Service dogs are amazing animals that do so much good for their person. When you see a service dog in public, please be mindful of the following information:

  • Do not pet or touch a service dog.

    • Even if the dog does not look like it is working, please do not pet.

  • Do not talk to the service dog.

    • Always speak to the person and not the service dog.

  • Never feed the service dog food or treats.

  • A service dog has a specific task to do for one person and should never be distracted.

  • Be mindful that some individuals may have an invisible disease and not look sick…be respectful of the person’s privacy.

  • In accordance with the American’s with Disabilities Act, a service dog is allowed everywhere except a sterile operating room.

  • Hotels cannot charge a person with a service dog additional fees or rates (unless the dog damages property).

  • Restaurants and stores must allow a service dog to enter. If the manager or owner argues, the service dog handler can call 311 for help.
